QR codes for business cards

published on 10.03.2010 in business cards

As a SmartPhone (iPhone) user I know how frustrating it can be to be given a business card and then to manually copy the info into your phone’s contact application. QR codes are a useful little tool that can be used to get around this problem.

QR codes are basically 2D bar codes that can be used to store information (text or numbers). They support a few different formats, including a URL, phone number, email link, and contact information. When using a QR reading App and the camera on your smartphone the application can read the information and take the appropriate action,  for example, if the code contains a phone number your phone will ask if you wish to call it, if it’s a URL then it will open your browser and take you to the web site, of most interest to me is the contact information, when scanned with the phone the application will ask if you wish to add the info to your Contacts, saving you all that typing.

The QR code below contains the contact information for OnlineFootprint.co.uk, if you have an iPhone try using the QR app, just point your camera at the image below and the app will do the rest. Not entirely sure yet if I’m going to print this on my business cards though.
